the following information is based on Michael Morcombe's eGuide to Australian Birds

Size: 37-44cm

Description: a large, distinctive butcherbird of open country, forages mainly on the ground. Magpies live in family groups, defending their territory against other magpies. They have a powerful voice: the rich and varied carolling has notes ranging from high and clear to deep and mellow, and can reach 100db.

Breeding: June-December. Typically builds nest up high, close to crown, occasionally on a power pole. The nest is a bulky mass of sticks, sometimes pieces of wire, with a neat and shallow egg cavity lines with grass and feathers and other soft materials. Clutch size is 1-6. Incubated for 20 days by female. Male helps occasionally with feeding but is usually preoccupied with flock and territorial defence. The young fledge at about 28 days.
